hustlerose:
i feel like transmed discourse is just bad in general. it’s like the discussion has been framed in a really weird way wrt how we talk about gender dysphoria. i think instead of talking about dysphoric and non dysphoric trans people or telling whole groups of trans people en masse that they’re wrong about their own experiences, maybe we should be talking about the many different types of ways that people experience being trans. gender dysphoria manifests in all kinds of ways for different people. sometimes it’s social dysphoria, sometimes it’s about appearance, sometimes it’s directed inward, sometimes outward, etc etc.
for a lot of trans people, especially the adult trans people i’ve talked to, living with dysphoria is all they know, and they don’t grasp the scope of how bad it was until they come out and start transitioning. this doesn’t mean we should bully young trans people and say they don’t deserve to transition if they don’t experience dysphoria in the same way or on the same level as you do. we should focus on lifting those people up and letting them develop their own identities.
all that said, transmeds are flat out wrong to only talk about being trans in terms of dysphoria, not to mention a pretty narrow definition of dysphoria. it’s such a varried and complicated thing to treat like a goalpost, and it’s not the only aspect of the trans experience. it seems reductive and not to mention depressing to frame it like this. not to mention all the shit they give nonbinary people. seems like they just wanna tell other people that they’re Doing Trans Wrong. like feel free to fight me on this, but i’m not in the business of angrily telling people they’re wrong about their own lives, identities, and experiences. as if you get to decide who can and can’t call themselves trans. as if your experience with gender is the only one that’s correct or possible. just like both sides of ace discourse, most of yall are like 15. when you aft like you know more about this that trans adults who have been out for years, ur really just embarrassing yourself.
framing the discussion in terms of “dysphoric trans people vs non dysphoric trans people” is misleading, shortsighted, and dishonest
